This international workshop, that took place in Sofia 28-29 May 2018 brought together academics and civil society organisations to talk about evaluating the impact of fake news on our society, why misinformation is being spread, and what are the best strategies for assessing online news. It provided space for exchange of ideas about building resilience and helping people find quality information. Fake news and online misinformation are a global challenge for the functioning of our democracies. The workshop provideа opportunities for cross-border networking within the framework of the platform “European Network for Non-violence and Dialogue”.
Organised by Partners Bulgaria Foundation, the Department of Economic Sociology at the University of National and Worlds Economy, and Partners for Democratic Change Slovakia, the workshop particpants enjoyed the sharing of experienced individuals in this topic – journalists, lecturers in academia, CSO representatives. It was enriching to listen to presentations and attend interactive sessions related to the topics of building resilience towards misinformation and false news.
During this workshop 30 experts in media, journalism and ethics, citizenship and human rights, discovered the power of sharing and enjoyed in-depth discussion about the role of quality information in current societies facing the rise of populism, post-truth and the spread of falsehoods online.
European Network for Non-Violence and Dialogue (ENND) looks at conflicts that currently attract attention of European media and public, hence steer public discussions, opinions and form values among citizens. It aims to create a functional movement of civic actors interested in peaceful interventions in current value based conflicts in the Europe. Network members believe in much stronger voice of joined forces of like-minded individuals and organizations who share European values and nonviolent approach. The purpose of the network is learning from each other, collecting tested conflict intervention approaches, supporting each other’s interventions, and organizing public campaigns that promote common goals and values.
