The judicial system in Bulgaria, but also globally, is often slow and ineffective. In order to protect their rights and lawful interests, the concerned parties need to go through a complicated judicial process. Toward its end, they have often lost interest in the dispute or the actual value of a disputed property has significantly been reduced.

Without denying or discarding the benefits of the judicial process, it must be noted that in many countries there is already a wide application with good results of alternative methods of dispute resolution. They are marked by greater efficiency, less formality during the procedure, confidentiality, a chance to pick your own expert mediator, greater control over the process and keeping good relations between the parties.

The fact that the alternative dispute resolution method is less known, lacks a well developed system of application and enough trained professionals, motivated us to realise the project “Developing and implementing an academic course on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in the faculties of law of Bulgarian universities”. The activities were implemented with the aid of the American Bar Association – Central and East European Law Initiative, and Open Society Foundation.
